Josh Kerr possibly ending Kelly's run of World Titles. I mean who wants to start of the year with an equal 5th?

Taj Burrow bested Adriano de Souza in the Sunday afternoon final of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. Burrow, who fell behind early against the slightly faster, slightly more progressive, slightly more arm-wavy Adriano, caught a mid-heat wave and earned a generous 9.43 to take the lead. Adriano needed a high seven and despite a well-surfed wave and a big air-reverse, came just .27 short of taking out Taj. It was so close that as the horn hooted, Adriano waited on the water patrol’s sled prepared to celebrate. He looked exhausted. Taj waited in ankle deep water while Woody, head of ASP security, looked at the judges tower and pointed at Taj —Him?— before he got the nod and hoisted Taj upon his shoulders. Taj celebrated with a Corona in front of a home crowd and Adriano was gracious in defeat. It really could have gone either way.

And in the Roxy Pro it was the battle of blondes Laura Enever and Steph Gilmore. Laura was on point the whole event, shoving a “Chicks Check Ya Tits” headband down the throats of anyone who thought she was just a pretty face. And Steph (who will win world title this year) was in vintage form and beat Laura, who surfed well but had a couple of surprising falls in her first WT final. And just as Laura proved she’s not just a pretty face, Steph proved (to anyone who saw her around Coolangatta this past week) that she is not just a great surfer. She is also a pretty face.

So many pretty faces! So many great surfers! All is right in the world.

[Remain calm. We are currently collecting images from our stable of photographers, who have been owning shit on the Gold Coast for the past week and half. With said images, we will make a flipbook. Expect it late this week.]

Surfingmag has been the only website to hint Adriano got burned in that pathetic final, Shame on all ASP f… judges, it all seemed they wanted revenge for Rio´s final at Arpoador when de Souza got the nod over Taj… 9.43 for that wave!!! c´mon guys we all know it wasn`t worth that much, he grabbed the rail and lost balance at the final move! Ridiculous

  2. Yoda says:

Whatever Bruno. Surfing is highly subjective. The judging is never going to be perfect. The judging for this event was especially inconsistent. But, I got to say, I thought Taj won that heat overall. That wave was definitely no 9.43, but it was at least as good as Adriano’s best wave.

Competition does nothing but cause controversy………. Just Live Already.

  4. typical garbage heap says:

I was there, unlike 90% of the jerks commenting on here.
Taj won fair and square. Take your green and yellow flag and flush it down the toilet.

Who really cares, I think most really hardcore surfers would rather be catching waves themselves, than sitting on their butts and watching some one else surf. It’s so sad to see how Quickdollars, ripcur, billabog, ect., have taken what was once a free and easy lifestyle, (and still is to many), and have tried to change surfing into a jock mentality business, just to stuff their own pockets. If these guys like to compete so much, maybe they should take up baseball or basketball, and get off the beach. Peace.

I can’t stop yawning. Hard to tell if this was yesterday or five years ago.

  7. Mik says:

Pro surfing is cool. So much more exciting than the NBA, etc. The scores get weird, ya. But the surfing? Insane. Highest level of performance ever. Shitty surf? They blow up in it. Just shows how much better these guys are than the rest of us. Even the commentators are rad… Hip, funny, and with real awareness of what makes surfing the coolest thing ever. BTW: @ “typical garbage heap”: grow up brah. Hating another country for being another country is like pre-school mentality. Its the new world, and we’re all part of it. Adriano is a very exciting surfer to watch. Taj is the man to beat, as his act has been better than Kelly’s in overall aerial range for awhile. It’s as complete as Dane’s, and always has been. But Kelly is the ultimate professional, and he is not afraid to go big at any moment. So he’s the King, and I hope he stays on tour all year, and forces someone to beat him. That seems the cool way to ride out…..

  8. Mike Anderson says:

I was impressed by Adriano “NOT” claiming after his air “whatever” on his opening wave. Ahh progress….
Good luck to all at Bells, I hope it Pumps…
And Huey send some waves to Indo A.S.A.P. please…

  9. Matt S. says:

Bruno I was thinking pretty much the same thing. 9.43?
But I watched that wave several times and I decided that typical garbage heap might have a point. The camera was too close up to fully appreciate that wave. I would have preferred to see it from further back. I also think Yoda makes a good point that surfing is subjective. How can you compare one giant air reverse to three good hard snaps with smooth transitions?
Finally, I hear you Tony but I think Mik has it right when he says that pro surfing is exciting and pushes the performance level of surfing in general.

  10. dirt says:

@bruno. Ads wasn’t burned, it was too close to call. When this happens, the judges go with the higher profile surfer or the hometown favourite. Everyone keep in mind that the ASP’s primary objective is to put bums on seats and expand their viewership. This is why guys like Adriano will never win a world title, and it’s why Kelly continues to win. Get in touch with reality.

many times i don’t agree w/ Jimmicane, but, in this article, i do.
@typical garbage heap: fair and square? shut up, boy, and grow up.
i don’t remember seeing Laura surfing before, but she was really impressive with her rad turns.

  12. alice lhen says:

Congratulation on your achievement! Hope in the next event you’ll win it again. fab defence

  13. typical garbage heap says:

    Alxn,
I don’t remember you being there. Were you the albino with the pink umbrella? Or were you the 3 foot midget doing the claims for ADS onshore. Either way, it looks like you are into role-playing and calling grown men “boy”…hope it all works out for you.

    Mik,
You don’t want a piece of me. I am not some American passenger along for the ride like 90% of the crowd here.
I own people. I make them do things for me. You can be my next slave.

  16. Clifton says:

Alejo had a great run and is a phenomenal suferr! It was inspiring to see him step up to the plate and handle the pressure of beating two of the best snapper suferrs in one heat (Taj and Joel) Nonetheless, comparing him to Dane or saying he kind of filled his shoes is just silly. Their surfing isn’t even in the same stratosphere, and although Alejo could, and probably will, beat Dane in a heat- he will never be half the suferr Dane is (not many humans breathing right now ever will be either, so dont feel bad A.M.)
