The Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile presented by MINI will commence this Spring with the world’s top big wave riders competing for a $20,000 prize purse during a contest window spanning April 1- May 31, 2012. The first stop on the 2012 Big Wave World Tour, the Quiksilver Ceremonial is one of the world’s most anticipated big wave events, with hopes that this year’s competition will see massive surf and perfect tubes behind Punta de Lobos’ famous “morros.”

“The lack of a big wave competition this winter leaves an international all-star lineup eagerly anticipating the Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile,” said Gary Linden, Big Wave World Tour Director and Contest Director. “This year some new faces will be surfing Punta de Lobos for the first time, up against a tough field of standout locals and overseas veterans. One of the most consistent spots in theWorld for big wave surfing, Punta de Lobos, Chile has yet to disappoint in the history of the event.“

The 2012 Quiksilver Ceremonial participants include: Jamie Sterling, Kohl Christensen, Carlos Burle, Marcos Monteiro, Peter Mel, Cristian Merello, Greg Long, Gabriel Villarán, Mark Healey, Jaimie Mitchell, Danilo Couto, Rusty Long, Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Ramón Navarro, Diego Medina, Fernando Zegers, Joao De Macedo, Felipe Cesarano, Nathan Fletcher, Ken Collins, Frank Soloman, Ian Walsh, Ben Wilkinson, and León Vicuna. Past winners of the event include Marcos Monteiro (2011), Christian Merello (2010) and Grant “Twiggy” Baker (2009).

“Last year (Punta de Lobos) showed its power and perfection – it really is the best place to start the Big Wave World Tour season,” said past winner, Marcos Monteiro. “Last year I won the contest in epic conditions, and have been training hard physically and mentally to compete this year against these incredible surfers fighting forthis great title.”

“Having the first stop of the 2012 Big Wave World Tour season in my backyard is great,” said Ramón Navarro, professional big wave rider and Punta de Lobos local. “I’ve been speaking to other competitors too, and everyone’s looking forward to the 2012 Ceremonial and another chance to spend time in Chile with friends while surfing gigantic waves.”

Just as in year’s past, Navarro will be airing weekly swell reports direct from Punta de Lobos. For more information on the 2012 Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile and to stay updated on the weekly forecasts, please visit www.Quiksilver.com/Chile.
