The NSSA National Championships Presented by No Fear Is Upon Us

posted by / News / June 18, 2007

This year’s summer fireworks are coming sooner than you may think. Starting June 20 at Salt Creek and then moving to Lower Trestles June 26-30 for the grand finale, America’s most important amateur event is sure to raise the bar once again. In the Open division, last year’s Mens champ Kekoa Cazimero, from Hawaii, looks to repeat his winning ways with another title this year. However, fellow Hawaiians Granger Larsen and Kai Barger are both itching for their Open Mens titles. Nine-time-title holder, Carissa Moore is the number one contender for this year’s Open Womens title, hands down. At only 14 years old, Carissa is the youngest surfer to make a final of an ASP World Championship Tour Event — the 2007 Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks. She is also the only female to make their way to the National Airshow Championship. Needless to say, Carissa is by far the heavy hitter in the womens division, and quite possibly any division she’s competing in.

Number one ranked Open Juniors competitor Nat Young is searching for his first title after winning both the Southwest and Northwest conferences this year. On his tail will be Hawaii’s phenom, John John Florence, and fellow Californian Andrew Doheny. Referred to as California’s golden child, Kolohe Andino is looking to be a sure-shot favorite for the Boys Open division. At the ripe-age of 13 this kid has seen more exotic locations than Robin Leach. Not only does he have more tour victories than anybody this year with 13, but he also competes in more divisions than anyone.

Look for Kolohe to stomp the competition at this years championships. The last three days of the championships (June 28-30) will be available through webcast, courtesy of SURFING magazine and Nike 6.0. All national championships and the Govenor’s Cup will be available live worldwide, hosted by SURFING magazine Editor in Chief Evan Slater. The webcast will be available via surfingmagazine.com, and nssa.org can satisfy all of your championship cravings.
