Trestles May Be Off Limits in Five Years

Ignorance is bliss; You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone — meaningless platitudes, until they’re not.

Today is a stressful day for the collective surfing world. Or rather, the next five years will become increasingly stressful as we await the answer to the question: Will we be able to surf Trestles after August 31st, 2021?

Because as of now, the fate of the San Onofre State Park is in limbo.

As it turns out, the state of California has no jurisdiction over the land that houses Trestles — including the waves of Cottons, Uppers, Lowers, Middles, Church, San O’, etc. The California State Parks, who currently preside over these areas, were leased this land by the U.S. military in 1971. The 50-year lease, which is on a $1-per-year agreement, is ending on August 31, 2021. Between then and now, both the U.S. military and the California State Parks have to decide whether or not the lease will be renewed.

The California State Parks committee has every intention of maintaining public access to Trestles beach and the adjacent campground. For the Department of the Navy, by whom the final decision will be made, public access to these lands past 2021 is not a foregone conclusion. According to the Orange County Register, who spoke with a representative from Camp Pendleton, lease agreements are generally decided two years before a deadline. Which means we’ll be holding our breath until 2019.

And who’d’a thought that we could lose access to such incredible waves right on our own doorstep? Just a few days ago, I was blissfully unaware that my 30-minute-walk-to-getting-outsurfed-by-10-year-olds-three-times-a-summer routine was in jeopardy. But now I am informed and not so blissful. I’m sorry if this article causes you similar despair, but you had know.

Yet if we do lose Trestles, and I sincerely hope we don’t, I can’t imagine a better way to spend my 28th birthday (August 31, 2021) than to shred Lowers one last time with 2,000 of my closest friends.

Going right!
