The ASP WQS 5-Star Local Motion Surf Pro at Guaruja, Sao Paulo in Brazil was completed this past weekend with American Shaun Ward taking the winner’s cheque of $12,000.
For Shaun, this is his 2nd ASP WQS win of his career, with the other being at his home break of Huntington Beach in USA earlier this year.
Shaun was able to hold off a multitude of Brazilians in the final rounds of the event.Of the final 16 competitors in the event 13 were from Brazil with just Shaun Ward and Nathaniel Curran from USA along with South Africa’s Greg Emslie as the non-Brazilians.
In the men’s ASP WQS ratings event winner Shaun jumped from 77th to 30th, while fellow finalist Simao Romao moved from 62nd to 27th.
Hizunome Bettero (BRA) has been able to extend his ratings lead to over 700 points as this was his 7th event, while Pat Gudauskas (USA) and Austin Ware (USA)are still 2nd and 3rd on the same points.
Rounding out the ASP WQS Top 10 are David Weare (ZAF), Raoni Monteiro (BRA), Nathaniel Curran (USA), Shaun Gossman (ZAF), Sunny Garcia (HAW), Kekoa Bacalso (HAW) and Brett Simpson (USA).
Both Weare and Monteiro are only counting 6 results of their best 7 so far, so expect a huge jump by them this week at the Mr. Price Pro in Durban, South Africa.
Others to watch at Durban will be Garcua, who is carrying a low score of 178, and Pablo Paulino (BRA) and Drew Courtney (AUS) both with zeroes.
Big movers upwards were Monteiro from 11th to 5th , Curran from 12th to 6th and Shaun Gossman 19th to 7th .
Losers all ping around 4-5 places were Garcia from 4th to 8th, Bacalso from 5th to 9th and Simpson from 7th to 10th.
That’s about it for this week, but expect a lot more movement next week as the ASP WQS 6-Star Mr. Price Pro comes to a close
