“That was the heaviest heat of my life.” Kevin Schulz isn’t talking to me. He’s standing three feet away, dripping wet while annihilating an interview with the local newspaper. “Josh is such an amazing surfer. Just to be able to compete against him was such an honor; I can’t even believe it.” Josh is Josh Moniz, the only surfer to best Kevin in the battle for that flashy 2014 NSSA Nationals Open Mens title. Kevin finishes his interview with an LED smile. I tell him good job and that he’s got a hell of a tail throw. Then I leave the beach.

I leave because I know this isn’t the last time I’ll see Josh, Kevin or any of the other kids that competed at Nationals. When you flip through the decades of this distinguished event, you’ll notice all the talent she’s seen. All the stars she’s birthed. From Andy Irons to John John Florence, CJ Hobgood to Conner Coffin, every single one of your favorite American (or Hawaiian, if you insist on the distinction) has been down this road before. It’s the road to the biggest leagues and it’s the road that Josh, Kevin and many more are speeding down. So I’m sure I’ll be seeing them again, even if I’m not interviewing them. —Brendan Buckley
