SURFING’s photo team is ichiban number one on planet earth, but thousands of their images go unseen. This travesty shall not stand. We give you SURFING’s Five Photos series.

Benji Weatherly // Pipeline
Benji Weatherley // Pipeline

One of my all time favorite B&W images. Shot in 1992 at Pipeline. Benji Weatherley was 16 at the time and was about to paddle out to some scary Third Reef Pipe. At the time, I was very influenced by the work of photographer Matt Mahurin and art director David Carson. This almost made the cover SURFER.

Kelly Slater // Mundaka
Kelly Slater // Mundaka

Fidel Slater: I know Kelly really likes this one. He says it captures what it feels like to be famous and get mobbed by fans. It was shot in Mundaka in 2006. He was walking to his car from the competitors area and I climbed up on this staging rig. Right when he walked by, he looked up at me and gave me a hat nod. I couldn’t have set up a better shot…

Lisa Andersen // Hossegor
Lisa Andersen // Hossegor

Shot in Hossegor, France in the summer of ’97. I had the idea to shoot her in a Marilyn Monroe kind of way. This ran as two-page spread in SURFING. Super proud of this one. This shot exemplifies what can be done when a surfer trusts you and your vision.

Mick Fanning // Brazil
Mick Fanning // Brazil

Mick takes the hill: Another conceptual shot I did of Mick Fanning when he won his first world title in Brazil in 2007. The idea was taking the hill (title) for Australia. It has a war-like feel to it.

Kelly Slater & Eddie Vedder // San Diego, California
Eddie Vedder & Kelly Slater // San Diego, California

I love this shot of my two favorite people, Eddie Vedder and Kelly Slater. Shot backstage at a Pearl Jam concert in San Diego, in July of 2006. Kelly had just introduced me to Eddie. After the gig, we all got some beers in Eddie’s room, then we went out to an after-concert party. This image shows just how close Ed and Kelly really are.
