There are certain comforts that come with surfing in your own backyard – no matter how uncomfortable the waves may be. This testament couldn’t have held truer during this year’s Pe’ahi Challenge for Maui natives Paige Alms and Billy Kemper – your respective 2016 champions. Paige has now become the first ever BWWT Women’s champ, and Billy has solidified his name as two-time consecutive Pe’ahi Challenge winner.

The waves? Well, they were big. But that goes without saying, right? This year’s competition came somewhat early in the event’s waiting period, but the international field of talent was at the ready for what is by far one of the most entertaining displays of competitive surfing. Bombs were wrangled, wipeouts were weathered and although a few competitors bowed out due to some healthy shellackings, grins were worn proudly at the end of the day. SURFING staff photographer Brent Bielmann was in the midst of the action to capture the moments you see below. Congrats Billy, Paige, and all the competitors that braved the menacing conditions, we’re already counting down the days until next year.
