16 More Heats At The 2014 Hurley Pro

The second half
More like the second quarter. After four days of laying, the 2014 Hurley Pro woke back up today in sicker-than-your-average Lowers. The waves were overhead, albeit frumpy at times, and fins were dying to be chucked. Chucked they were, sometimes — though the judging panel proved they’re still not afraid to throw a highball score at a handful of cutbacks. Which is cool and all… at Bells.

Nice guys finish last. So do 12 surfers…
Hey, remember when we said that it was still the second quarter? That’s because the men’s event was left stranded at Round 2. There’s a lot more football to be played, folks. You wanted these guys on your fantasy team during Round 2.

Gabriel Medina: Gabriel beat Raioni Monteiro in a clunky first heat of the day so yeah, he’s still refusing ever lose early on in an event.
Kelly Slater: He confused the shit out of the judges with a weird straight air to whitewater raft today, which they somehow deemed an 8.5. An 8.5? He did, however, appear to find some sort of rhythm in the morning warbles and sent Jeremy Flores to the Euro leg early. To Jeremy’s credit, he had some really mature, really positive words to say after the bout. “Losing this much probably isn’t good for my surf career, but there are some good life lessons in it.” Clap.
Kolohe Andino: Brother dodged a last place result at his homebreak, though lady luck didn’t remain by his side in Round 3.
Jadson Andre: A win for Jadson is a win for Brazil and a win for Brazil is fine by us. His parents were 13 and 14 years old, respectively, when Jaddy was born. He grew up with nothing, but now he’s got everything — or at least one hell of an air reverse. He beat Bede with the highest heat total of Round 2 today without even chucking that air rev in the process. Kid’s got a backside like J-Lo in her prime.
Filipe Toldeo: Filipe got a 10 today. Don’t let that 9.83 deceive you. Trust us, it was a 10.

And for dessert…
‘Scuse me waiter, there’s a 13th place in my key lime pie! The first four heats of Round 3 brought us home today. Mick won, but that doesn’t surprise you at all so here are the other three guys that won…

Michel Bourez: A loss for Jadson Andre is a loss for Brazil and a loss for Brazil is also fine by us. Michel handed handed Jadson and his country a 13th today.
Ace Buchan: Ace beat Nat Young in the battle of goofyfooted white people with blonde hair who ride for Hurley. 9.43 and all.
Miguel Pupo: He’s smooth, like a Monday morning glass of cold whole milk. Miggy’s got one of the more pleasing styles on tour and he looked wonderful while beating Mitch Crews and Kolohe Andino today. A (possibly Brazilian) storm even rolled in over San Clemente as he beat Brother.

They say that tomorrow…
What to expect: full days of competition both tomorrow and Thursday.
What not to expect: Anybody to wish Jihad Khodr was still on tour.
—Brendan Buckley to still be portly
