This past Sunday, SURFING Magazine teamed up with the City of Del Mar to put on The Art of Surfing presented by Hurley and Active Board Shops. Two dozen shapers, along with a handful of notable surf artists, musicians and host Rob Machado assembled at Powerhouse Park for a full day and night of celebratory stoke. There was Rusty Del Mar’s 20th anniversary surf contest, the latest in surfboard technology from Rusty, Channel Islands, Doc Lausch, Xanadu, Jon Carper and others under the “big white tent.” Thomas Campbell and Wolfgang Bloch had their works on display in the Powerhouse. Bands like the Pawn Shop Kings and Years Around the Sun. And then there was Rob, answering questions, signing autographs and – after the sun went down – commentating and playing seven of his favorite surf film segments. There was so much to check out, it was tough to leave. So, not many people did. From the dawn patrol clear until the moonlit session. Thanks to everyone who made the inaugural Art of Surfing such a success. Until next summer, stay creative. – Team Surfing
