Day 1 At The Oi Rio Pro

Words: Dayton Silva

I used to live down the street from a small pizza shop. It was sometimes, open, sometimes closed, but never on a predictable schedule of either. The pizza was mediocre, but I ate there because it was the only pizza place around. One slice of pepperoni, and an order of garlic knots, please. I could have easily boycotted it because of the sub-par cleanliness, or the cashiers greasy disregard for appearance, or the two men that were always loitering on the side of the building with their hands in their pockets – but I didn’t. The meal was relatively satisfying and so I focused on the positives carried on with my day.

Day 1 at the Oi Rio Pro is in the books and it was an undeniably anticlimactic murmur of a start. The event kicked off competition at the new event site, Grumari, which is an inconvenient ten miles away from the bustling Barra da Tijuca – where the contest is normally held. This led to a decrease in attendance, which may have been refreshing for some of the more introverted surfers, and an irregularly crowded shoreline. The conditions were wind blown, scattered, and a just a little bit confused in all aspects of the word. But there’s been an influx of negative attention on Rio as of late. So why don’t we take each one of the above photos as a case for the positive. I mean, it can’t be that bad, right? The weather’s nearly tropical, the bikinis small, and hell, maybe there’s even a half-decent slice of pepperoni in town!
