It looked like there was going to be a nice little south swell with good winds to start out the 2016 Indonesian season, so I got in touch with one of the most knowledgable guys around, Tai Graham.
We starting texting back and forth about how it might be and where we should go. Next thing I know, It was 10 PM the night before the swell and we still hadn’t even made a call. [laughs] We checked one more time, assembled a crew and finally pulled the trigger. We woke up at 4 AM and hopped on a flight to another island.
Right after takeoff, we could see swell lines that looked like they never ended. When you fly over Bali, you can pretty much see every major spot and it seriously looked like everywhere was pumping. When we landed, we got reports that confirmed what we saw. We were pretty bummed. Until we got to our place.
Apparently, there were about ten people around who had all bailed the night before we arrived. Turns out they left 4-5 foot spitting barrels for us to enjoy alone. We spent 36 hours scoring from sunup to sundown with just our friends. It was a great way to kick off the season. —Scotty Hammonds
