Hurley Lowers Pro Final Day: Slater Wins Re-Rematch

posted by / Photos / September 22, 2011

Editor’s Note: We’re now in the process of gathering all the best imagery from the last three WT events — Tahiti, New York and Lowers — for a proper recap of this mad stretch on tour. It’ll be up soon. In the meantime, here are a few teaser shots from yesterday’s finale at the Hurley Pro.

As Kelly said, “Owen has no weakness.” Rights, lefts, big, small, hollow and mushy, he scary in all conditions.” And that’s what makes for a World Title contender. PHOTO: Peter Taras

Kelly Slater has managed to evolve right alongside the new crop of surfers on tour without losing a step in any other part of his game and it’s a recipe for a ridiculous domination of his competitors. PHOTO: Peter Taras

B4L called Heitor Alves going all the way this year. He gettings a late start but would have taken this contest if Aussie/Seppos media darlings were not getting wanking jobs from judges.

Adriano had right to be pissed. Slater gets an 8.5 for paddling out with a smile. Brazzo surfers have to work twice as hard for scores. That’s why we need to claim each wave.

Brazzo 4 Life: WHAT?!? Slater smiles and the tour falls… sad but true. As for your remarks about “Aussie/Seppos media darlings”, how’d that work out for Julian Wilson, Brett Simpson? What nationality are they again?…

I’m guessing Brazzo 4 Life is a troll or an idiot.

    whatever you say bud…

The best claim is no claim….

Slater should have gotten points deducted for those ugly flat, no rotation and no grab airs.

STOP OVERSCORING SLATER – Slater gets 8s and 9s for doing turns. Although they were big hacks, no one else gets big scores unless they take to the air or do something really progressive – and let’s be clear, a turn followed by freeing the fins on the open face is not progressive – that shit was new in 1990. Even Knox, who does the biggest hacks on tour, can’t get above a 7.5 for power surfing – he can’t buy an 8. They should just give Slater the title and take the rest of the year off …yawn!

Heitor did good on the last two event, but lets not get ahead of ourselves here, ok?

Brazzo 4 Life… I’m a brazzo too, but you are fuckin lame. very fuckin lame. Many were misjudge during this event.

yeah… those “functional” airs that slater did were pretty uggo. Having said that, Slater destroyed that event. Julian did some cool stuff but the explosiveness of Slater’s surfing was unmatched. Having said that, I thought Owen’s size was a disadvantage (a weakness?). If the waves were more powerful owen would’ve out flaired slater.

For those who say that Slater was overscored, re watch the heats again and take note on how much harder his turns were than everyone else’s. This is at 3 ft Lowers and he’s throwing more water than everyone. Sure, Medina, Wilson, Wright, et al had some very progressive maneuvers, but many of their turns lacked the power & flow of Kelly’s and he mixed it up with the ‘functional’ airs, which they were. Maybe not Kerrupts or Gorkin’s, but he didn’t have to hop into the next section after completing them like the other fellows did a lot of the time. Power will never get old, so those who mix it in with new school flair will be rewarded. Not to take away anything from Owen, as he is extremely consistent with his progressive maneuvers, and I do think the smaller surf didn’t help him out; but this is why I am missing Dane & Jordy at these events to complement Slater’s performance bag.

By the way I got news for ya’s, look at the last 4 contests dates and travel scheduels.

After the last three bang bang bang.

Do you think stamina, fitness, focus and discipline will play a part?

I was hoping it would come down to Pipe and I still do hope so, but the writting is on the wall and it says, S11ATER IN “11″

yah- everyone has an opinion and surfing is subjective. Julian was one of my favs for a final appearance. He was ticking boxes/ had bad calls go against him and then the crusher triangle w/ Owen doused his chances. His act was the 2011 rebuttal to KS’ act.
And had they finalled it wouldve been a great one. Now onto KS’ scores- either love him or hate him- fact is he is THAT GOOD- both on the rail and above the lip, plain and simple. Anyone disputing his win is a hater and obviously fails to understand the criteria. Great event in some sub par Lowers- impressed w/ the performances of Heitor, Adriano (although the stance is beyond Bronco) JW, Kerrzy, Joel, Mick. JJF, Simpo. The young twirling BRZ’ will have their day in the sun but til then they are still looking grommed out next to the top 5. Jordy & Dane, PLEASE COME BACK!

What kills me is Slater is a EAST COAST SURFER! Take notes on the boys out of the OUTER BANKS of NC. They can surf with anyone.
