The day begins with Jordy's Quarterfinal heat against Damien Hobgood. Skies are gray. Jordy's surfboard has a carrot on it.

The seas are unruly, but so is Jordy's temperament. He overpowers the chunk and sends Damo to the showers.

The final is as close as Glenn. Kelly Slater will later tweet, "Thought Mick Fanning had the better ride and Jordy had a better second." But the judges disagree and both Jordy's scores are higher. He successfully defends.

Jordy receives his retinue. Meanwhile, the tiny and defeated figure of Mick Fanning slouches up the rocks. Vengeance clouds his mind.

The hat and can are commonplace now, but the sunglasses hanging on singlet collar — wholly unnecessary with the coming storm — are a new touch. Jordy's free right hand is a missed opportunity, however. Get the champion another Red Bull.

Jordy was the standout surfer throughout this event. Fucking strong and athletic surfing. Fanning is such a class act, and also a massive talent. That was a very very close final.
