John John Florence Pretty Much Wins 2014 Quiksilver Pro France

The door is locked…
But the window? Yeah, that’s open. Six heats ran at the 2104 Quiksilver Pro France today — four heats of Round 4 and two Quarterfinals — until the wind did us dirty and sent everyone to their respective wine lunches. The biggest takeaway from it was Gabriel Medina losing and Kelly Slater not. If that doesn’t drench the world title race fire with petroleum then nothing will. Kelly will now be the red to Jordy Smith’s blue in Quarterfinal heat #4. If he wins that, then wins his semi, then wins the final, then wins every heat at Portugal and Pipe, he’ll probably be the world champion. It’s scary ’cause it’s feasible.

Hot or freezing…
19.90 and 7.34. Both of those figures were winning heat totals from today. With the Atlantic throwing 8-10 foot fastballs, there were a few hits and a lot of misses. Our three stars of the game were…

John John Florence: That 19.90 up there? Yeah, it’s his. John hounded a tube every time his feet found the wax in the first heat of the morning. Hell, even his two throwaway scores would have comboed defending event and World Champion Mick Fanning — and Mick’s 13.16 heat total would have won almost any other heat today. His 9.00 wave in the Quarters against Kolohe wasn’t too bad either. John lives on a different level.
Kelly Slater: The aforementioned near-perfect heat was followed by two duds. Josh Kerr and Jadson Andre both struggled through strange and confusing heats, winning with heat totals that didn’t scrape the double digits. You got the sense that the ASP made the wrong call in running today… then Kelly paddled out and got a 9.07 on his first wave. He didn’t have much luck after that, but it was all he needed.
Josh Kerr: While his Round 5 heat wasn’t much to brag about, Kerrzy did the world title race a favor by posting a wise 12.83 points to beat Gabriel Medina in the Quarters. Bravo.
It’s probably worth noting that I watched two grown men share a moped while wearing Deus X Machina shirts today. Vroom vroom motherfuckers.

They say that tomorrow…
The swell should be smaller, the wind should be friendlier and the Champagne Region is less than 1000km away. —Brendan Buckley
