What were you doing at 13-years-old? Probably throwing rocks at cars, pantsing your friends and being a shithead in general. But here’s Tyler Gunter at 14, charing Wedge. What a difference a year makes. Photo: Benjamin Ginsberg

Dreams really do come true. Well, not the literal dreams that you have at night — like going to Arby’s with Red Forman from That ’70s Show or getting into an altercation with your garbage man. But the ambitious kind of dream comes true. The hopeful, I would do anything for this to happen type. Case in point: Last week’s springtime California combo swell. The stars aligned, so to speak cliche. A dominant south swell got crossed up by a faint northwest and the Santa Ana winds blew offshore in that arid, angelic sort of way. So many stars, so very aligned. It was the perfect combo — even if it didn’t come with french fries and a large drink. You can always go to Arby’s for that, with or without Big Red.
