The Vans US Open of Surfing starts tomorrow. Last night, to kick things off, Vans invited a group of athletes and media to the plush Port Theater in Corona Del Mar to mingle and watch Vans’ newest film, Get-N Classic, Vol. 3. The evening started with free Pacifico, tasty hors d’oeuvres and beef stew. Then came an on stage interview with Nathan Fletcher and Dane Reynolds. It was as awesome as it was uncomfortable. And finally, there was the movie, which did everything but disappoint. For the Get-N Classic series, the third time really was the charm. The Vans team spent nearly two years scoring — dreamy Caribbean, firing Scotland, massive Chile — and packaged it into one impressive 40-minute masterpiece. And best of all, it will be free online very soon.

2 years in the making and how much money spent and Vans is happy with giving it away for free. Vans is happy with the small turnout to see the flick? Any wonder why Surf Movies are dead now? All for the almighty marketing at the U.S. Open. That sucks.
