Late morning at Huntington Beach saw overflowing parking lots and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds on both the sand and the pier, all joined to remember the life of Sean Collins. The masses huddled around a podium to hear surfers like Brad Gerlach, Mike Parsons and Taylor Knox share their memories of Sean — stories of forecasts, surf trips and cold beers. The message was clear that Sean was a man who, if you’re a surfer, has touched your life in one way or another. And if the turnout was any indication, people recognized the impact he had on their lives. After the memories were shared a prayer was said and people took to the water, riding the current along the HB pier with flowers in their mouths, and formed a truly massive circle just outside the waves. The circle then collapsed and in the middle Collins’ sons, A.J. and Tyler, stood atop a surfboard raft and embraced. And then, well, everyone went surfing.
