Steve Sherman: A Retrospective on the Momentum Generation

posted by / Photos / March 27, 1997

For the past two decades, SURFING Photo Editor Steve Sherman has been in the trenches, documenting whatever is happening RIGHT NOW. Back in the early ’90s, the NOW was all about the Momentum Generation, an assembly of like-minded high-performance artists who, through Taylor Steele’s infectious videos and an understated, “we’re all just a bunch of friends who like to shred” mindset, set the precedent for generations to come. Leave it to Sherm to capture that spirit in all of his images.

    Wadup-
I’m looking for a photo of my wife,(Mary)Elaine Davis, from Surfing Mag, April-May, 1975 (we’ve been around a while)The shot was taken by Dan Merkel at Sunset, pretty awesome for a woman, or anyone, at the time. From St. Augustine, FL, after graduation she jumped to Calif.to Hawaii & dropped right into Sunset. If I’m not mistaken she was rated around 7th “?” in the world around that time. We have a copy of the photo but it is pretty trashed and no matter how much I try I can’t get it right. THANX for any photo U can dig up of her. It’ll blow her mind!-Hope your winds are always offshore & stay in the tube, E.D.(U can publish the request if it helps)- Hang Ten “?”(or heels thru the soup)Ha,I’m just an old fart!(Did that once no one believes me)
