Where's Lizzy
In late January, Del Mar surfer girl Elizabeth "Lizzy" Clark set sail in her 40-foot sailboat on the adventure of a lifetime - San Diego to Baja, Baja to Mainland, Mainland to Central, Central to South American, South Pacific to New Zealand, and on and on.
Where's Lizzy: The Voyage of Swell
Just when I thought I was at my personal limit for days without surf, I was faced with a boat that needed more attention than a two-year-old and a provisioning list for the South Pacific that would weaken the knees of the most ambitious of shoppers.
Where's Lizzy
The following morning the wind blew us almost all the way to our next sea parking lot at Bahia Honda.
Where's Lizzy: Episode Three
With Swell's bow headed south again, Shannon, Kemi, and I — the first all female crew of the voyage-plowed across the 25 mile mouth of Banderas Bay. We would round Cabo Corrientes, the Mexican equivalent of California's Point Conception for notoriously nasty weather, at 10:00pm that night.
Where's Lizzy: Episode Two
The adventure continues as sailor/surfer Liz Clark and her 40-foot sailboat as she treks from San Diego to New Zealand and beyond. Where is she now? Stay tune for her bi-weekly journal entries and find out… [this episode is brought to you by Hagan Daas Ice-cream and Modelo beer: just kidding]
Where's Lizzy: Episode 4
The first solid south swell has just spent over a week flushing the Michoacan coastline with waves. It just so happened that Swell was floating within striking distance of a spot I'd been eyeing on the charts for the last two months. The swell is gone now, its energy translated into memories. My body bears the only tangible evidence of its occurrence.
Where's Lizzy: Episode 5
On our last morning in Zihuatenejo, I turned the engine over to warm her up and a sound like a garbage disposal rumbled from under my feet. Immediately shutting her down, I ripped off the engine covers to assess the damage.
Where's Lizzy: Episode 6
If a giant had painted Central America onto the earth, he made a pretty straight stroke with his brush from Mexico to Nicaragua. But have a look at any map, and you'll see he kicked over the paint can at the northern border of Costa Rica.
Where's Lizzy: Episode 7
Ahhhh, Puntarenas, the lovely city by the sea. It's tucked midway up the armpit of Costa Rica's Gulf of Nicoya, and ironically it has a lot in common with an armpit-there's usually a pungent aroma around and it's always sweaty and hot.
Where's Lizzy: Episode 8
"I want to learn how to climb the coconut trees," I told them. The three pointed to the smallest boy at once. Apparently he was the best at it. "Manana, quiero aprender," I told him. They were thrilled at this and we agreed to meet the next day in the afternoon by the medium-sized palm tree by the pier.
Where's Lizzy: Notes from the crossing
My feelings drift between frustration, irritation, awe, and occasionally, fear
Where's Lizzy: Panama by land and a pirate by night

Doing time in an East Coast season of discontent
Wolf Parade: The best rock ‘n’ roll is in constant deterioration
The best rock ‘n’ roll is in constant deterioration. It’s in five places at once. It’s a mess, barely holding itself together on the sublime brink of total shambles. And the guys in Montreal’s Wolf Parade fit like it best that way. Self-consciously described as “noisy, traumatic, pop”, their sound is often compared to that of Indie-favs Modest Mouse, who were in fact integral to their deal with Seattle’s notorious SubPop Records. They’re described as spastic. Twitchy. Nervous and unpredictable. And that’s the just music.
WolfMother: The kick in the ass that rock needs
Somehow, this is just the kick in the ass that rock needs. Big hair. Tight pants. Van Halen leg extenders. Black Sabbath power chords. Zep-like guitar hooks. And boldly polished, Stonehenge-mystical, heavy metal theatrics.
Nick Carroll reports on Roxy Pro round three
The Roxy Pro third round shows us just where the chicks are at.
The vibe at Duranbah (forget the Stuporbank) turned down a notch today. Not
only was the surf a little smaller, but the Roxy Pro was on.
In an echo of years past, before women's surfwear earned billions, the girls
still draw a marginally smaller crowd. But the competition these days
deserves more. This year's women's WCT is a mirror image of the men's - a
bunch of hot young rookies against some powerfully seasoned pros - and it's
never looked more legitimate.
