From Couch-o Simpo… (Day 2)

posted by / Stuart / February 10, 2009

Today started early with a call from not one, and not two, but rather three photographers all wanting a piece of Brett’s tasty phantasm. At 6:00 he was up folding laundry; at 6:30 he was driving South bumping MIA with the heater on (this state you call California is suspiciously akin to Siberian tundra). By the way, MIA is apparently accused of sympathizing with Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tiger separatist movement. Who knew?

After major rain yesterday, Tuesday dawned clear and crisp, with a fair bit of swell running and some offshore airflow. Brett put his rig all over the place for a shutter-happy crowd of around 10 at Salt Creek. There were about as many people shooting as surfing; plenty of paychecks to be made this morning. We dined and Brett was back out there. This is work.

Now Brett’s sleeping and I’m going through all his cabinets and personal files. Amazing way to learn about a person. Soon we’re off to Kevin Dean’s DSC training session – an intensive and surf-specific 90 minutes in which Mr. Dean readies his ragtag crew of WQS warriors for the coming Tasmania/West Oz leg. I expect “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Disney’s Mulan to be playing at the gym. The lyrics are pasted below, in case there’s anyone out there who doesn’t know them by heart:

Let’s get down to business
To defeat the Huns
Did they send me daughters
When I asked for sons?
You’re the saddest bunch
I ever met
But you can bet
Before we’re through
Mister, I’ll make a man
out of you

Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within
Once you find your center
you are sure to win
You’re a spineless, pale
pathetic lot
And you haven’t got a clue
Somehow I’ll make a man
out of you

I’m never gonna catch
my breath
Say good-bye to those
who knew me
Boy, was I a fool in school
for cutting gym
This guy’s got ‘em
scared to death
Hope he doesn’t see
right through me
Now I really wish that I
knew how to swim

(Be a man)
We must be swift as
the coursing river
(Be a man)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a man)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

Time is racing toward us
till the Huns arrive
Heed my every order
and you might survive
You’re unsuited for
the rage of war
So pack up, go home
you’re through
How could I make a man
out of you?

(Be a man)
We must be swift as
the coursing river
(Be a man)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a man)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

(Be a man)
We must be swift as
the Coursing river
(Be a man)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a man)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon (and hold “moon” for a while, so it’s really more like “mooooooooooon”)

I’ll have candid and revealing photos with tomorrow’s post. Today I was figuring out my first digital camera, and failing. It seems you don’t impregnate them with film canisters like in the old days. Whoops.
