Well, it started out slow, came roaring to life when it really mattered, then slowly, steadily made a quiet exit. The 08/09 Hawaiian winter by no means classifies as a memorable one. There was no Eddie event (but there were some entertaining weekly updates online by wildman Mark Healey.) There were no wild big-wave tales (although the North Shore’s hellmen did rack up some frequent flier miles to places like Europe and the Pacific Northwest.) And there was no Backdoor Shootout (although plenty of guys had some good-but-sporadic target practice). Of course, the photos still make it look like a gem of a season -- especially when SURFING’s water vets Daniel Russo and Jeff Flindt are at their best. Here’s a few highlights from a winter to forget.
