How did you start designing bikinis?
Kristy Michaels: When I first started working for RVCA, we were only doing a few boardshorts per season. I wasn’t very into it because when I envision the RVCA girl, she is wearing an itsy-bitsy bikini —not boardshorts. We tossed around the idea of trying swim to replace the boardshorts and soon enough it became a reality.

What’s your go to perfect bikini?
My perfect go-to bikini is a cheeky bottom and tiny slide triangle top. I prefer to mix and match prints and solids. I never wear matching prints.

What are the main influences behind your brand and its designs?
There isn’t one definitive influence; we take pride in being eclectic and pulling from many different cultural influences that vary from season to season.

What inspires you as a designer?
I am less inspired by fashion and trends and more inspired by how people wear what they wear. A pair of jeans and a T-shirt can easily inspire me because it conveys a certain attitude and feel.

What would your dream vacation be?
My dream vacation would be to rent a little house on the beach for 3 months with my family and have no obligations to the outside world allowing us to really disconnect and enjoy all the beauty that every day brings. The water would be warm and the sun even warmer.
