Albee Layer was invited to compete in The Eddie. He didn’t go.
The decision seems questionable on the surface. The Eddie is probably the most prestigious event in surfing, and to compete in it is an honor that very few men will ever know. Why would he decline that? The answer rhymes with paws.
I spoke with Albee after The Eddie was called on and he explained his reasoning. He told me that he hasn’t surfed Waimea Bay much and he felt like his position would be better filled by someone who has. Someone more deserving, in his words. He also noted that Jaws — the wave that he has, in fact, dedicated his life to — could be firing. And so it only felt right to stay there.
And apparently, it was right to stay there. See above. —Brendan Buckley
