Behind The Photo: Wassel’s South Pacific Surprise

posted by / Video / August 27, 2013

The intrepid Dave Wassel talks about the act behind his spread in the October Issue of SURFING Magazine. “I knew for a fact that I could have made that wave… I had done five giant pumps to get to that point and all I needed was one more to high-line over the foam ball.”

there is no way in Hell Wassel was going to make that barrel.

  • anyone

too bad the content on this site doesn’t load as well as the ads so easily play… unwatchable.

  • Jack

best part of this clip was the filet knife.

  • Mik

Wassel is Alpha, and he’s being amazingly diplomatic in not telling it like it is here.

Whether he could have made it or not (and I believe he could if he says so), how many surfers take off that deep on a wave like that???

    Rad.

The boogie tool should be banished from that spot.

    End of story.

  • local teahupoo

    Mik,that bodyboarder is a local
how about the sufers take thier jetskis home eh?
bodyboarders found that wave and we’ve flooded it with jetskis.

dave didnt paddle in that deep, he let go of a rope that deep because of the hussle between tow teams that happens way outside the break.

four or five tow team hassling over ocean swell 500m outside the break, playing chicken.
eventually one “surfer” gets the wave. unless its shared with GMAC.

how are the paddle guys supposed to get waves?

byw kook surfers drop in on bodyboarders all the time and no big deal is made, bodyboarders just shake thier heads and think, kook shoulder hoppers.

this happens once and the peanut gallery make a big deal out of it

  • local teahupoo

credit to Dave for not making it an issue about surf craft.

  • BossMan

He would have made it for sure with one or 2more pumps and a high line hold…
not the first time ive seen a sponger go splat…always funny

  • Cody maverick

The amount of respect he has for the local who cock blocked him is inspiring

  • tahitian boy

“The boogie tool should be banished from that spot” what’s that madafucking hell! The bodyboarder is a localboy and took this wave paddling whit no motorised help! I’m not racist at all but guys, you can’t write bullshit like this toward locals bodyboarders. We had welcomed you and you answer us like that. Sometimes i regret that we don’t do like hawaiian boys!

  • no

If you haven’t been to this spot and don’t know the locals you don’t know shit and shouldn’t comment.

The local bodyboarders have been surfing this wave for years and years and don’t want it to become like teahupoo. If you’re not a local and you want to tow, go to teahupoo. This will just keep happening and I guarantee they’re pissed off with the coverage it’s getting.

Wassell seems like a good guy but there is absolutely no way he was making that wave, highline or not. He was too deep and the shockwave obliterates the barrel for the whole second half of the wave.

  • R.Mellin

freaking awesome video, in every aspect.
    congrats.

  • Kento Moto

This was not an average wave… the place, the wave and zone were crazy heavy. You can snake others on a regular day or place. No question, the body boarder was wrong.

  • G

Telling that story while sharpening a fillet knife. Great direction, classic. The subject matter (content) is not funny yet when combined with the visual it’s hysterical.

  • G

One more thing: Did that body boarder stuff or what!!??

  • Tahitiboy

This surfer should never have been here… and should never come back, this place is for locals only and some of them have the nuts and level to paddle the bombs the so-called big chargers of the world need to tow in to get….. Just don’t ever come back to that spot, as said further up locals are pissed at the coverage and are gonna start to show teeth at the break, and believe it or not they can get gnarly…..
Time to put those black shorts on guys, foreigners on this break, Tahurai getting dropped in by foreigners in Teahupoo, 200m from his house…. time to get angry….

  • Vince Moaloka

Leave it to Surfing to eff up another spot for da boiz…spots been sik without these gumbys….just canceled my subscription too….just a matter of time til Surfing does the Trans thang……holler

  • ivan

not sure you would make it big guy. nasty wave. but hey… drop the knife. no true reason for it. just drop it, keep cool, save lives, and enjoy the water while you are young and able.

  • WTF

BossMan you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about – one or two more pumps at Teahupoo?? Stick to Bells Beach mate.

  • Mr.E

Mr. Wassel should respect the local boys and don’t try to get a cover shoot with a jet ski at this point just for the money. Because it is just another money story . Let the local boys peaceful and respect the locals and their story.

All the pro and the media circus have already killed Teahupoo. So it is a normal reaction that the local don’t want this spot killed again by some pros who don’t respect anything. End of the story.

And the Bodyboarder on this shot has big balls…

  • sapinus boy

dont come tow in to sapinus take your balls and paddle or stay home we dont want our home to be a circus respect that please we share wave if you resperect if not thats what happen and this guy is a local he was waiting for hours for this wave while dave was take all the wave in tow so he should apologize to JOHN DUVAL repect bro

  • sapboy

just take your balls paddle and repsect locals or fucking stay home

  • sapboy

we dont want our spot to be circus and the bodyoard JOHN DUVAL is a local and i dont think you guys gonna charge like him paddle so repsect or dont even try to come i was there that day there is no way dave was going to make it he is dreaming i know my spot he was way to deep and JOHN was waiting for hours while Dave was taking all the wave in tow in he is full of bullshit

  • Romain

John local bodyboarder took 1h paddling from the shore to arrive to the reef.
He has wait 1h more TO TAKE HIS TURN at the peak to have 1 wave.

Seems like there are people coming with motorski, NOT WAITING more than 10min and catching the biggest wave????

WHEN YOU CATH A BIG WAVE LIKE THAT BY PADDLING, YOU ARE SO CONCENTRATED ON WHAT YOU DO, THAT YOU CAN´T PAY ATTENTION TO SOMEONE STEALING YOUR WAVE 500m inside with a rope and a motor.

WHEN YOU DO A INTERNATIONNAL PODCAST WITH A BIG KNIFE I GUESS THE LOCALS BODYBOARDER GONNA WELCOME YOU AHAHAH

    THANKS USA…………………………….

  • Tim

The fact that this guy continually took wave after wave that day, then getting towed straight back into the lineup and into another while disrespecting locals waiting for waves to paddle into is one thing….. Too then make a clip to try and portray how high and mighty he is, is a bit of a joke…. That wave was at the end of a session in which one local stood up his own wave…. go figure

  • spongey

‘I know for a fact that i would of made the wave” interesting use of the word “fact”.
skis and paddles dont mix. aloha.

  • Mitch

Looks like the locals are going to have another spot ruined by F$#kwit tow teams. Leave the tow circus for Teahupoo and let the locals paddle Sapinas. They deserve some respect.

  • Mark

Context, people. Context. This isn’t the same situation as someone dropping in on you at your local. It’s the inevitable outcome when two radically different approaches are used on the same spot, not to mention the same wave. The video bangs of self importance and the comments above fluffing Wassel’s high horse and stating the boarder should be “banished from the spot” are indicative of the kind of bullshit mentality that prevent a more amicable and organised approach to rising these waves on any craft possible.

While I assume the video is attempting to portray some sort of respectful attitude toward the incident and the local boarder, the fact you made it ironically undermines both.

Everyone takes knocks in this game, but I don’t remember a single one whereby a video of a knife toting, smug tourist exposing local spots and insulting the local boarders was a ‘diplomatic’ outcome.

  • DavidW

HE WOULD HAVE NOT MADE THE WAVE!!!!!!! No way he would have high lined it through that foam ball and explosion.. Stop towing and paddle.

  • carlos

I am a mainland Mex surfer who has been burned, along with every local in my beach, by a jet ski ass towing or stepping off on a wave who every one else is paddling for… jet skis have nothing to do in any spot that has paddling surfers out, period. skis are for pussys except if its definetly not possible to paddle in to. In regards to banishing a local (surfer, boadyboarder or whatever) from his surfspot for dropping in on a hawaiian… i haven´t heard anything more stupid. Try to get a wave in hawaii or even paddle out at some spots to see if locals respect you…

  • carlos

And wassel must be blind if he has already seen the video and still thinks he could have made that wave…

  • carlos

And wassel must be blind if he has already seen the video and still thinks he could have made that wave…

  • local_boy

Go home, tourist! Grown here, not flown here.

He’s gonna need that knife if da boys catch him on the beach

  • tahurai hates you

fuckin kook wassel. I respected you before this. Obviously you haven’t seen all the videos of the bodyboarders paddling in when it is this big (or even bigger). You don’t deserve any more waves at Saps and will probably cop a beating for this showmanship knife wielding bullshit. NO WAY were you making the wave, that just shows how out of tune you are with Sapinus. Stay on the north shore and don’t come back to Saps

  • G

I have to agree with some of the posters that appear to be residents. Surfing capitalism has got to be a huge bummer for surfers living anywhere idyllic and peaceful. All these stage surfers apparently care about is putting on a show and how things appear to the viewing audience. The Kardashian’s do come to mind. On another note: Have you ever listened to Dave Wassel when he’s in the commentary both? It’s truly unbearable, one liner after one liner, cliches and endless silly analogies. Wassel has to have second thoughts about how this little video clip was constructed. He does appear to be stating how righteous he is while wielding a knife. This clip could be an SNL skit. I think Dave probably has some life lessons to learn like all of us. Side note: Dorian is a great commentator.

  • Peter

The bodyboarders have been posting videos of this spot for a couple years now on Youtube…so how is this exposing it?

  • Adam

this isnt chopes for those who are saying it is.

  • somone with sense

okay maybe he shouldn’t be towing at this spot, but the body boarder was in no way close to making that drop. And on the exposure of the spot i have seen more videos than i can count online of bodyboarders here much bigger deal than one video of somone on their feet getting destroyed along with a bodyboarder who possibly is the reason for it. come one people

  • Paul

@Peter: Because surfing mag has about 80 times the audience as those bodyboard edits. Not to mention all the skuttys (ski/butt/buddys) that will follow suit and blatantly expose a spot that has no place for major surf magazines and especially not surfline

Every local who has commented here confirms that he WAS NOT going to make that wave. Even if he made it close to the exit the explosion would have devoured him…pretty arrogant to claim something like that. Someone is going to get hurt if they keep towing out there.

  • sapboy

yeah tahu you right bro no respect DAVE is full of bullshit stay home and never come back to sap no tow in in sap you are not welcome at sap do that in your spot not in TAHITI

  • Jem

So Wassel you are cool if all the tahiti boys come over every huge Hawaiian swell next season and tow in deeper than you at pipe whilst everyone else is paddling in and take every wave? Maybe then they could make a lame knife wielding clip claiming they are humble after someone gets pissed off and drops in on them on a bomb…..

  • Ice Ice Baby

each tow team should spend their first hour towing random locals in, pay to play, then get some for themselves

  • Center Line

Is there gonna be a follow up video? Ouch! Can’t always be at the the top of the pecking order. Especially when you’re out of your territory.

  • carlos

haha, i think wassel got the opposite reaction from what this self righteous clip was intended to get… maybe next winter we all jet ski “loving” (sarcasm by the way) guys will take OUR jetskis to tow at pipe, sunset, better yet velzyland and tow from way outside on perfectly paddleable waves… and then make our own knife videos…

  • dick swinggin

hey u sponger toads…you dont paddle a fucking thing yet rely on ur massive 2 ft wide swim fins…mine as well be a 25 hp engine…so quit pretending that u paddle

  • dick swinggin

by the way does it get more talentless than sponging? fine you tools have eqilibrium issues and need to lay down like a kid on a kick board at day camp

  • skanydub

Wassel your an asshole! The bullshit that´s coming out of your mouth really don´t tie in with your body language is saying. What´s the deal with the big knife bro, penis envy, wave envy or just denial?
Your behaviour was wrong, why don´t you just admit it?
So Wasshole, if some outsider came to the north shore and did what you did, it would of kicked off big time!
Massive respect to the Tahitians for been so cool and laid back. Thanks to you and all the other testosterone pumped idiots that take over when the swell comes, this will probably change very soon.

  • Tamuera

This clip is for a food network show or somethin ? I think we don’t need that to teach us how to make raw Fish .
Take care wassel my brother John hav been to cooking school too…

So sick your drop John !

  • kick_a_taioro

RESPECT JOHN for standing up for all the boyz that were out there that day, pissed off with this arrogant piece of shit attitude.

Wassel is for sure a great waterman, but a complete fucker on that one. His attitude on the spot and him being a complete clown on this video with his ridicule knife and fish are simply epic. Pretending being humble thru his speech while being a total dick and moatapoi…

  • Tamiran

Why tow when others are paddleing? Why does non-local hog the waves? Bodyboarder…surfer…it doesn’t matter.
Wassel should appologize to Duval immediately.

  • Killah Sap Local

To Dave Wassel, we’ve always been super welcoming and respectful to foreigners who come to surf our waves, but because of this disrespectful action to not only John… but also to our people, this will probably change very soon. I don’t ever want to see your face at my home spot again. Paddle always has the priority over tow-in where we come from. Oh, and the knife crap… not cool at all… Fa’atura te ta’ata no porinetia or stay home!

  • sweeper

Everyone here knows that he COULD NOT MAKE THE WAVE. Also You can tell on how deep he was that he was trying to skunk everyone in the line up. The word “line up” has totally lost its meaning these days even even for those that are not towing in. He was very stupid to make this video interview, which makes him inconsiderate in and out of the water. Polynesians are some of the most friendliest inviting people I have ever met, but it looks like the surfers from my country (the U.S.) are turning this place into a cluster-fuck circus like California and Hawaii.

  • JrJ

Dick swinggin. go back to surfing trestles you fucking kook. You’re not gonna shake anyone here.

    http://www.tahiti-infos.com/Surf-a-Sapinus-Dave-Wassel-vs-John-Duval-une-polemique-internationale_a82164.html

Just a bit of the article translated:
John Duval, following this terrible ‘wipe out’ finds himself in big trouble on the edge of drowning and will not be rescued, he managed to reach the peak of fishing on its own, totally exhausted. Some regulars spot Sapinus believe should not become like Teahupo’o. One of the rules is commonly understood is that when there are surfers or bodybordeurs taking waves paddling, jet skis and tow surfing are banned and for surfing towed it happens to Teahupo’o on waves of more than 7-8 meters, not those of Sapinus 5-6 meters still surfable by those who have the attributes’. It has also been read as paddle will always take precedence over surfing towed’ or ‘it’s really tells Dave he really believed to get out of where he was? Tahiti is not Hawaii, the Polynesian surfer is nice and welcoming reputation but some limits must be respected. In light of the many comments, apparently these limits were trampled by the Hawaiian Dave Wassel. The different actors in this episode were contacted but were refused for the moment to comment, saying that the situation was very tense like that. A video response through a specialized international media is being prepared by a group of bodyboarders, surfers and personalities of local surfers.

  • Dont Care

recently talked to alot of friends that were there that day. Wassel was taking all the big bombs and from what I heard was way out of position of even getting shacked on most. bodyboarders or not they fucking charged it. There are several videos from that same day online showing both spongers and surfers killing. and some surfers with out “assistance” I say Dave should make peace and admit that the locals got the best of him. Strait forward if this was at pipe, and the tables were turned well things would be so much more diff from what happened here. point is: dont show up to a spot with locals with a ski and try to take all the bomb’s. you ride the north shore dude; use your skills you have and paddle like everybody else did that day and wait your turn. I have seen at pipe or anywhere on the north shore when the same guy keeps paddling around everybody and jockying for waves, you have one of boys on your ass so fucking quick its insane or ” they drop in on you ” this guy got a piece of his own medicine. just deal with it dude. you got punked quit crying and get over it.

  • Ive surfed that spot

Santa Claus getting towed by all his reindeer would not have made that wave.

  • Just a dad.

I was just told this morning an different story about the conflict. It was Dave Wassel been taking all the good waves and the paddlers fighting against the current and not surfing much. Guess what type of reaction you get in this situation? It’s because of guys like Wassel the tahitian will slowly stop being a good host. Shall we start to wear the black shorts too?

  • sirfun

Just to add one more bone of contention with knife wielding Wassel.

When you watch the video closely notice how he never once makes any reference to the fact that he was tow surfing thru paddle surfers. He attempts to make this out to be a local versus haole thing because he knows it’s bullshit what he was doing. He’s a freaking lifeguard he knows better than to take a ski around people in the water.

  • He Man

I find this video to be incredibly unfortunate. While I know that ego is a huge part of having the balls to surf waves like this, Dave should have simply known better before signing off on this video….You really just fucked yourself Dave. Your body language, and your prop for the entire segment can be so easily taken out of context. Everyone has the right to their own biases and perspectives, but when you are shown on a video talking about a sensitive wave and certainly a life or death situation, you don’t do it while sharpening a fucking knife Dave! While many people have had a lot of respect for you over the years, I think this gives many people the opportunity to take a shot at you, whether it is you rocking the microphone, or you, trying to be funny somewhere else.

    This video is not funny.

  • Stefhangibson

http://youtu.be/dFrHMuzUmKQ Yeah about that… Your move Hawaii

  • Protect13

It’s the Tahitians waves they can take as many photos & videos they want. Easier getting towed into that on a surfboard than paddling on a bodyboard!! Better & uncrowded waves in tahiti than hawaii, why would the locals want to leave. It’s time for them to protect their spots before its too late.

  • bg

any other place in the world wassel would have been told to leave the water before he had even caught any wave.

  • Justsayin

Arrogant Yankee tourist. Leave the jet skis out of the surf, they stink, they pollute, they are loud disrespectful interlopers. Lock em out.

  • Marcus

    Wassel messed up big time.
First by towing at a spot where locals were paddling. And second by making this rediculous video; whats with the knife.
Time for wassel to be a real man and admit his failure and apologize.

  • Rob G

Tahiti is an amazing place and the culture is defined by the ocean. I spent a month there about ten years ago. Beautiful people inside and out. I was taught to greet everyone when i paddled out. Shake hands and say,”Iorana” then take my place at the end of the line. These are some gnarly looking dudes by the way, BIG guys but very welcoming. One of the heaviest barrels I ever got was when I was sitting between two locals. I didn’t even want this beast but it was my turn. One of the guys looked at me and said, “you go” Glad he said that. A wave I will never, ever forget.

The only bad vibes I got was when a bunch of Hawaiians paddled out at Teahupoo and thought they owned the place. No etiquette whatsoever.

To the locals, please stay true to your roots. It would be a shame for the culture of true watermen to be ruined by incidents like this…

  • Alx

waterman? Nothing more than a stunt publicity.

  • dont care either

WASSEL YOU’RE MAKING HAWAIIANS LOOK BAD AND MESSING IT UP FOR EVERYONE. APOLOGIZE.

  • Jonathan

If Wassel (whom I used to respect) really was as concerned about the Tahitian’s life as he claims, he should have helped rescue him on his jet ski. Jet skis should be there to save lives, not to burn the locals by towing in behind the actual take off zone. I recon, Hawaiians are the new Brazilians. I love how they always say Tahiti is like Hawaii 40 years ago… well don’t do to Tahiti what you did (or at least let happen) to Hawaii and stop throwing the word waterman around so liberally. Its like modesty and humility, you don’t own it, you don’t claim it, you strive for it.

  • boy caught

BOYCOTT weasil’z sponsors then he will learn. ya don’t support arrogance and elitism.
sorry to sponsors but gotta do whats right drop him! v

  • Fig newton

Wassel deserves no respect especially if its true that him and his ski boy left the other guy on the inside. What a lifeguard! What kind of lifeguard drives a ski through a lineup. Dude is an egomaniac. Sharpening knives, burning people, hogging set waves on a ski at a spot thats localized. Total donkey….definitely part of that contingent of Hawaiians that always talk about respect but only as it applies to them! Gotta give respect to get respect

  • João

Respect the locals everywhere, no matter what craft they surf!!

And Paddle will always have priority to tow in !!

Wassel…shut up with that pathetic talk, and show some respect

  • Rock the Casbah

Dave didn’t use the knife once to cut the fish. I’m just saying…

  • Reva Temaru

this guy is a real tool. “i don’t think the bodyboarder would have made it where i was”……maybe cuz you were being towed by a motorized vehicle? you are not welcome here ever again. don’t come back.

Nice to hear one haole ( I’m old school & haole to me means foreigner, regardless of skin color ) give way to some local boys, regardless of who’s right & who’s wrong. • fishmonger

total idiot, sharpening a knife for what. total dick. good thing he got smashed and no one got hurt. maybe just a bit of his surferbro pride.

pretty much all hawaians wearing volcom stickers are egotistical dicks, coincidentally. i wonder what they feed them.

  • jjhangs10

Get some upper body strength or a longer board grommet. Learn to paddle in like they do at Uluwatu or Padang Padang and bounce your kook head off the cliff wall, the local natives will be sharpening their knives as well. Jet ski losers like this have taken the soul out of the sport. Well-funded spoiled kids. Grow up son and practice interviewing for a real job.

  • http://Www.togatig.com Geoff McAndrews

This is way more heavy then anyone even realizes. David is acting like a kook. We (the outer island locals who are defending a wave that David, Manoa, and Dorian want to exploit next) would love to meet with Volcom (to demand they drop him from there team because he is not representing there brand in a professional manner. His driver was cherry picking all the biggest bombs that day. We will not drop in on him if he shows up on our island. We have other plans. Manoa came to our island with a drone helicopter and started filming. He got spanked by “real Tahitian locals” afterword he went to the police and complained. Kooks go to the cops. We are waiting. Don’t come here. You know where I’m talking about. Warning (don’t even think of coming here.)

  • Muse

A video and article dedicated to missing one wave? Wow…get a life!

  • subgenius

man, this is sad…best comment so far is that the Hawaiians are the new Brazilians. You know what? that’s spot on and so true. To be fair it’s a small % of the the “entitled” kooks from Hawaii that ruin it. As has been pointed out – anyone from anywhere comes to the North Shore and behaves like Wasshole did in Tahiti will be banished. What do I know? I know that I grew up on the North Shore and couldn’t be happier to be away from the macho uber kook bullshit these guys spew and project. Understand that the Wasshole – Makooka – JOB gnarly douche-bags are NOT representative of the culture as a whole but they do set the tone. Plenty of people really embarrassed by this little vid, Wasshole needs a huge slice of humble pie. Sounds like he will get that extra large serving next time he returns there.

  • http://mrdeforrestdA lbixrez

If he surfs long enough, surf, not tow pose like he’s relevent to the sport, he will learn to respect surfers at their home and that there will always, always, be another wave. The locsl that took that siicidal drop I believe, did so in an attempt to cut short Wassholes donkey hog tow session. I hope he succeeded.

  • joert20

anyone who cuts ANY line is a jerk. The line at the bank, the line at the store, the line for concert tickets, the line up for a wave.you cut a line and you know you are wrong. When it happens to you, you get pissed. Thats how you know its wrong. Towing in to get ahead of paddle in? A thousand times wrong, regardless of the outcome on the wave. You should have never been on that wave in the first place.

  • landLocked

yeah right, “life and death” situation, “ACTING” real concerned. Video makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. For what purpose were knives being sharpened. He probably did not even catch and clean his own fish! Wassel does not deserve bombs if his weiner arms can’t paddle out to catch them himself. Maholo to the locals, please don’t judge us based upon the antics of one spoiled ass prick.

  • beak brain

this is even worse than J.O.B. blowing perfect waves at pipe with his longboard to shortboard nonsense. i wonder how much radioactive tuna they consumed before thinking it was okay back paddle everyone and tow at that spot.

  • Tahitiboy

I don’t know what island you are from and talk about Geoff (don’t wanna know either, chuuutttt!!) but I know for fact that if they go around islands where there are local surfers planning to surf/tow and film it, they re not only gonna get dropped in, they re gonna get bashed up, taken all their boards and video equipment and sent back to tahiti by the next plane/boat half naked with their viri under their shoulder…. Many places have been fucked by kooks, some indo waves are unsurfable on big swells cause of those behaviours…. let what belong to the locals to them, and don’t spoil and destroy their day dream so u can show off some new amazing wave, name it and locate it just so YOU ONLY, one couple of guys, can make big bucks of it and ruining for guys who are actually living there all the time….
And if some hawaiians don’t see the right side in that, and think tahitians are pushing it, don’t forget that MAEVA is nowadays much much stronger and meaningfull than ALOHA….

  • Tahitiboy

To the geniuses that say this drop was unmakable, that John could never have made it etc…. might want to check his cover picture…

  • burrito

all these morons from hawaii thinking they’re hotshots wherever they go is getting real old real quick. the volcom douchebag culture is truly spoiling the sport. it is not volcom that needs to drop wassel, it is the surfing community that needs to drop volcom. also the precedence set by a few new jersey “hawaiians” has encouraged many others there to treat those around them like shit, even though they are apparently all about respect. the older generation was the real deal, the new one is mostly self concerned assholes that will sell out others happiness for fame.

I like your passion tahitiboy. Thats what we need. Violence might not be the answer though. on certain other islands they will punch u out and help themselves to your stuff (people like smitty and the boys do this on there island. Not here. We dont talk or punch. we shut the session down by driving a boat around in circles. Do this in the channel at the wave in question and there will be no surfing. The boat causes confused seas. Not good surfing conditions for photo taking. when the pros leave you stop the boat a surf with your friends. u should use this system. what am i saying, fuck it beat them up. check out the other video of a hui member telling the tahitians how to run there contest. its hilarious. he really wants more hui members invited to the trials. what a joke. waqssle might have fucked it up for all hawaiians. are they even hawaiian. most of these guys are Philippineo, mexican, or from Portugal. fuck them. They look look hawaian and u talk pidgin but r they really hawaiian. I say sit them all down. The biggest threat is coming from within. The boys on Tahiti have to understand that the outer islands are not in Tahiti. Tahiti is an island. u are never in Tahiti. U can only be on Tahiti. Warning to everyone who lives on Tahiti (do not come to the outer islands to profit from the waves there.) You can do that At Chops.

  • Tahitiboy

I m pretty sure I know what island you live in and talk about now man ;-)) Sick waves out there as well and good call to protect them from exposure in a peacefull way…. Maybe don’t need to push it as Smith and Tautara (right spelling?) do – even though i ve seen more than one footage of their beloved spot lately – but something needs to be done for sure…Those guys have been taught how to behave with disrespectful visitors by Johnny boy back in the years, so it s pretty much the hawaiian way of dealing with those problems.
Personally I don’t care if they are haole, mexican or whatever, if they raised there and this is where their heart belongs, so be it and I dont think the matter is just about hawaiians even though cause of short distance trip and flat summer out there they are the more numerous….. but no matter how cool some can be (Florence brothers for instance, haole yes but super mellow and respectful surfers from what I know), people always tend to remember the bad things over the good ones…As a consequence Dave Wassel not only did truly fuck it up for himself, but his behaviour sure did not help his fellow islanders from the north hemisphere….

  • NUFF SAID

That was a makeable drop for the sponger…tow in DOES NOT get priority, Wassel. Yon need to wait your turn just like everybody else. I’m tired of this bullsh*t!

how could i have wasted five minutes of my life watching a video about a man i don’t care about doing a sport i don’t really care about who lost five minutes of his life because somebody else did something in front of him–my time gets wasted also, for example by Surfing Magazine!

  • SKYGOD

At first I saw this as a guy cutting off a guy going deep. When I read all the comments as saw the jerk towed in around other surfers whoa re struggling out there against the current I thought what a self important A-hole!

I have never towed in and of course would try it. A blind person can see the difference. Tow is surfing was once looked upon like a with a kook leash, however every one has a kook leash today. But it does suck big time when you got some jerk long boarding it it into the barrel jet-set style against sinkers. Seriously dude after reading the comments and seeing the facts you sure stepped on you pecker with this one. I would have just shut my flapper and moved on.
Lucky you tires did not get slashed in the process fool.

  • SKYGOD

I remember when surfing was a sport of the peaceful souls. Instead it has turned into some cut throat crap as who is going to be in surfer magazine or some crap and stay off my turf I am a warrior surfer. How pathetic. There are dolphins and there are sharks. these losers are the lone sharks.

I bet surfing mag supported wassel in the article. The same way this vid conveniently leaves out certain details of the story. Exactly why I cancelled my subscription, too much mindless worshiping.

looks like this video backfired on you DAVE,nice wave and both of you guys have big balls to ride it.Quess id be pissed if i lived there and someone from somewhere else came out and used a jet ski to get all the best ones from deeper. And i can see how DAVE could be mad at some bodyboarder dropping in on such a heavy wave. The bottom line is both of you guys lived to see another day.If it were back home in HAWAII the guy would have deserved at the very least some harsh words. But then again like you said your the haole there in his local break.I take no ones side but in my opinion the boogie guy still dropped in and burned you, quess its better just to cut up the fish and enjoy a good meal and laugh and know if he comes to PIPELINE he gonna get burned right back …at least the sun was out and it made a nice video clip

Yeah….you are like a longboarder, sitting out the back, taking the best waves from the people who live there and have been waiting. Then you blame everyone else, and don’t take responsibility.

  • SurfingKook

Aloha Dave. I have never met you but from watching your interviews I can tell you seem like a cool and funny guy. With that said, I heard both sides of the story and will agree with Spounger John. You were at fault that day — not the other way around. You came to their turf and tried to overrun them by catching one wave after another with jet ski assistance. Not cool! If I came to Hawaii and pulled that poo I guarantee a local would have taken me to blows. You may want to send a public apology out before you J.O.B. yourself from an area like he did Brazil.

  • Les

Dave and John, you guys should meet and discuss your point of view openly and come to an agreement. In the end, we’re all surfers.. lovers of the ocean and not freaking free-fighters. The Tahitians feel burned and they probably are.. so let’s show some understanding, lets get to some kind of agreement about when to paddle and when to tow and then go out there and push each other into some big ass caverns! Let’s surf!

    Mahalo!

  • An Actual “hawaiian”

Dave is not “Hawaiian”. Just because he lives here doesn’t make him Hawaiian. I grew up here on Oahu and it pisses me of to get any sort of relation to this douchebag. I’ve surfed here my whole life and the majority of the local crowd here are very nice and share waves. But it’s thanks to wassholes like this that give “Hawaiians” a bad rep. Don’t go back to Tahiti Dave. Better yet, leave Hawaii to cuz us true Hawaiians would never act like that. Much respect to John for doing what he did. I commend you Tahitians for standing up for what’s right. Don’t let them ruin your home like the wassholes did to mine. Aloha!

  • North Shore Paddle

In Hawaii surfers that are paddling in have the right-of-way over tow-in guys regardless of who is deeper or what they are riding. Everyone knows that! If you want (and are allowed) to tow with paddle surfers in the line up then you know you may get dropped in on. Even then, you will still get 5 times the waves as the paddlers. C’mon Dave, show some class!

  • weber

well said Dave, dont know you, but I gotta lot more respect for ya. take care

What would happen if some foreigner started towing in at Pipeline taking all the bombs while everyone was surfing???

  • troy

after watching both sides of this story i think you are a complete tool.

reality – passive aggressive knife sharpening is not only wrong its ridiculously self involved, do you really think this makes you look tough? u have opened a shit storm in a place where localism has never been an issue….

reality – tow in does not have right of way…. anywhere…

reality – you need to have a good hard look at yourself and think about what is the “right” thing to do in this situation….

  • nemo

    stupid guy!

  • ignorancemustbebliss

This video may come as shock to people that haven’t spent any time in Tahiti but Hawaiian’s acting like Tahiti is one of their islands is hardly new.
Tahitians have been far to kind & patient over the years with greedy fuckers like you Wassel.
How you ever thought this video was a good idea just goes to show how much of a egomaniac you are.
And Surfing magazine you’re a joke – how about you show some balls & share the real story.

  • BMac

    “I’m a haole at a local guy’s spot, so I’m not gonna say much…”
Why even make this video? Total backfire. Surfing should come out with a video for every guy Wassel has burned at Pipe….really weird motives behind this piece.

  • Haole Hawaiian

Wassel- Normally a mild mannered quick witted guy. It bums me out to see you act like this. Plain and simple, your at fault. That lid hucked himself over that ledge to make a point. You know you cant go to someones home and drop in on all the waves like that with a ski! If guys are paddling they have priority, 100%. Man up and give a public apology and admit you were acting like a douchbag. You said it yourself “Im a haole at a guys local spot, i cant say much…” but you said too much already Dave.

  • Bob

Wassel’s a kitten compared to most North Shore surfers. He doesn’t seem like that bad of a guy but he should answer for not rescuing this guy on the ski. I would like to know if that’s true because he’s a fricken LIFEGUARD and he should resign from that post if he didn’t pick that guy up on the ski. Also, Hawaiians, or I should say people who live in Hawaii (most people who try hard to claim Hawaiian have no Hawaiian ancestry), have been trying to flex their muscle Hui style in Tahiti for decades and I don’t blame the Tahitians for being fed up. Most Tahitians that I’ve met display true polynesian hospitality way more than the folks whose parents migrated to the North Shore.

  • haze

already knew the guy was an arrogant meathead tool from his announcing at cloudbreak and the way he carries on….he should get out of the spotlight before he makes himself look like an even bigger idiot

  • haze

why dont they talk about why he was towing when everyone else was paddling?

  • TowSurfers Go Home

We had the same crap going on in NorCal. All these “pros” from SoCal and SC would bring skis to the outer reefs and beach breaks and run rough shot over the locals They’d always claim it was too big to paddle in. It was getting out of hand. Thank god the government banned it.

  • Auwe

Typical Haole fashion, use and abuse resources. Tahiti and French Polynesia are not exotic playgrounds for pros, they are the homes and heritage of a people who sacrificed everything to gain everything in sailing out into the blue unknown. Frikin Wassel, if surfing don’t excite you, find something else to do. If that is your view of surfing, you truly are haole. You are not a child of the ocean if you only abuse it for your own advantage, your prostitution of the ocean disgusts us. This is a good opportunity for surfers everywhere to contemplate what they would do in similar situations. Re examine your commitment to make the water a better place or to make it your place. Shame has been brought on the professional surfing world by Wassel. Now he must make things right. Show the same humility to people as you do to the reef.

  • Bob

I agree with everyone that he was in the wrong to tow and hog waves in this situation. However, how smart is it to drop in(or in this case base jump)on someone in heavy waves like that? The sponger had no control and what if he had landed on Wassel or Wassel had speared him? Like I said before, he would have been better served to do the old group beat down on land. A bloody nose and a bruised hand beats two dead surfers.

  • david loy

Wassel ur a kook dude i hope u get to the same situation as john, and for u to swim from the lineup to shore, ur a kook u left him to die

  • Fanny Alger

Dave, you don’t even know the proper way to sharpen a knife.

  • jolicoeur philip

This is sooooo americain, where we go we are the boss, we are the chosen, the few. We own this place and we will show the local boyz how it’s done. This shows in evreything americains do. wassel do not ever come back to tahiti, you are not welcome. a lifeguard what a shame. wassel you SUCK big time.

  • Everton Pech

Dave Wassel showed to the whole world the big 0asshole he is. If you Dave were really a hawaiian you must know how much shame you took to Hawai.
At least a public apologies is needed in here. All the good things you’ve done across your entire life is now meaningless after your bad behavior in Tahiti.
Try to focus on the real surf with aloha spirit. Pray asking forgiveness!
Be a man and use that knife only to fillet your fish not to try intimidate anyone.
And by the way…go home from tahiti haole!

Surfing mag should have shelved Wassel’s interview and let him sleep on it. They added fuel to the fire on purpose for exposure. Lame.

  • Anderson

Wassel says here ‘he was concerned for (the boogieboarders) life’…uh….. Then why did you leave him to die in the channel? You obviously had zero concern for him at all.

  • No longer a fan of surfing mag

Wassel is a kook. No longer a fan if surfing mag for running the video and one side of the story.

  • Ol timer

Surfing magazine has perpetuated these localism articles for years now and never ever run both sides of the story. Because its run by all star uncle sam american red necks!!! Wassel and Surfing mag, WANKERS!!!!

  • Rob eng312

Dave, in the video you were offended that the bodyboarder dropped in on your wave, which is understandable from anyones viewpoint. However, you were towing in instead of paddling into those waves, and to be plain, tow-in surfing ruins good surf spots. True, when its fifty feet plus, tow in surfing is the only way to catch waves, but the best surf spots are not the biggest surf spots. Tow in surfing introduces an unfair advantage over paddle surfers (including bodyboarders), and allows the rider to catch bigger and better waves from further out thus limiting the wave selection of the local surf crew and making them angry. It is common knowledge throughout the surfing world that respecting the locals is always a top priority in foreign waters because whatever angers the locals will ruin a good surf spot. Even the best waves can become the worst spot if the crowd is unpleasant or unwelcoming. Dave, you ruined the surf that day by bringing out your jetski and towing in on the local crowd. Though I do not agree with localism, I do believe in respect for your fellow wave riders. And if you felt like you weren’t respected on that wave or in that lineup, ask yourself if you think those locals felt likewise.

  • Word

2 wrongs don’t make a right. Glad to see John took his counter video down when he saw this was unproductive. Respect.

  • Larry Balag

If the facts are true about the locals not allowing or wanting tow in’s at Saps, then DW and other tow teams should have known the locals wouldn’t be vibing them. I live on the mainland, but have my roots from Hawaii and I admire plenty of the Hawaiian wave riders, especially DW. But come on Dave, that video just shows you as the typical meathead surfer who feels entitled to live by their own rules. Shame on you Dave! You forget how islanders think and feel about foreigners and you were the foreigner at this break. You live in Hawaii or What! And you not helping this kid out of the impact zone while being a lifeguard makes me sick. Once again, shame on you David! It was incredibly crazy for John to put his and your life into such danger, but I guess they had to make a statement that respect must be given no tow in’s at this break. Hawaiians demand and take respect. The scene at Chopes is out of control and it looks like this encounter has started some new tow in regulations in Tahiti, which are long over due. Hope the true Hawaiian locals do not back you up and scold you island style..Look at the rift you caused with your selfish entitled surfing. This is the kind of act that makes sponsors question the kind of character of the athletic they want representing their product. Hope you man up and send an apology to the people of Tahiti for your arrogance and inconsideration if you ever plan to surf their waves again or you going to get some Tahitian lickings Braddha!
