A Saturday afternoon. December. Pipeline. After a string of low-scoring survival heats, the 2014 Billabong Pipeline Masters was called off the for the day. And then, as if mother nature became suddenly spiteful, Pipe turned on and one of the best freesurfs of the year ensued. It wasn’t the best Pipe you’d even seen — no perfect green lines rolling through Second Reef and flawlessly collapsing once they rounded first — but it had character and that’s what made it special. It was grouchy. Grey. Dangerous. There were wash-throughs and closeouts. It was a true portrayal of Pipeline. Koa Rothman and Nat Young got two of the best waves of the day, but Tiger VS Bear’s internet podium has room for only one champion.
